History and Funding of the MSRA Brain Bank
In 2005, the Research Management Committee of Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia identified that the main factor limiting progress in MS research was the availability of high quality human brain tissue. With support from the NSW Government’s Office of Science and Medical Research, the MSRA Brain Bank was established in February 2008 as a joint venture between MSRA and the University of Sydney.
The Australian Brain Bank Network (ABBN) collects and stores post mortem tissue for the MSRA Brain Bank, allowing substantial financial savings through the non-duplication of infrastructure and enabling the largest possible number of brains to be collected on a national level.
The MSRA Brain Bank administrative office is based at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Research Institute located in Camperdown, NSW. Tissues are currently stored at ABBN member institutions.
We would also like to thank the Trish MS Research Foundation, the Collier Charitable Fund, and the Association of Financial Advisors for their generous support that has made the MSRA Brain Bank possible.
Financial donations remain vital to the continued existence of the MSRA Brain Bank and are very welcome! If you wish to help support us, please click here.
